At The Feeling Space, we are committed to providing compassionate and effective psychotherapy services, some of our clinicians are trained or informed in Internal Family Systems (IFS). Discover a transformative approach to healing and personal growth through Internal Family Systems (IFS).
What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?
Internal Family Systems Model (IFS) is a therapeutic approach developed by Richard C. Schwartz in the 1980s. This innovative therapeutic model empowers you to explore the rich landscape of your inner world, recognizing and embracing the diverse parts of yourself. By fostering a compassionate relationship with these parts, IFS helps you heal emotional wounds, resolve internal conflicts, and cultivate a harmonious sense of self.
Key Components of IFS:
- Multiplicity of the Mind: IFS recognizes that individuals have multiple inner parts that can represent different emotions, memories, and behaviors. These parts often emerge in response to life experiences and traumas, particularly from childhood
- Core Self: The primary concept of IFS is that of the core Self, which is seen as inherently wise and compassionate. Therapists help individuals access this Self to facilitate healing and restore balance among their parts
- Types of Parts: IFS identifies three main types of parts -
- Exiles: Parts carrying pain and trauma
- Managers: Protective parts that work proactively
- Firefighters: Reactive parts that emerge when Exiles break out
- Exiles: Parts carrying pain and trauma
How IFS Can Help You:
- Accessing the Self: You can learn to connect with your core Self.
- Understanding Parts: The therapist can help you recognize and understand various parts of yourself, while building a trusting relationship.
- Healing Trauma: In IFS terminology, with permission from the protective parts (Managers and Firefighters), you can explore and heal Exiles, allowing them to release burdens of trauma.
- Restoring Balance: The ultimate goal is for the Self to guide the internal system in a harmonious way, transforming protective roles into healthier, more constructive functions.
